The Origin
We’re talking villain stuff.
Welcome to Phoenix Rise Comics. I am not entirely sure how you found your way into the secret lair, but since you are already here, I guess we will let you in.
My name is Kevin, and I am the owner of Phoenix Rise Comics, better known around here as PRC. This little corner of the internet grew out of a lifelong obsession with comics, collecting, and nearly anything that belongs under the geek umbrella.
You could say I inherited the addiction. My dad was a comic degen... ahem... collector long before I came along. Over the years, he accumulated a massive collection, and when I was younger, he repeatedly made me the same promise.
Flash forward about thirty years, and I finally took him up on it. He kept his word, I bought the collection, and suddenly I was surrounded by enough comics to make most reasonable people question every decision that had brought them to that moment.
Somewhere between sorting long boxes, rediscovering old stories, and realizing just how deep this obsession went, Phoenix Rise Comics began to take shape. The dream was never simply to own a comic shop. The real goal was to build the kind of comic shop I had always wanted to buy from.
The Incident
A few years back, I was like most comic collectors. I chased variants, tried to figure out what the next big book might be, read the stories I loved, and routinely spent more than I intended every Wednesday. Supporting my local comic shop mattered to me, and I was happy to do it.
Eventually, I asked whether they offered a pull list or any kind of preorder discount. They did not, so I started looking online.
At first, the big online stores seemed perfect. The selection was enormous, preorders were easy, and I could reserve books months before release. The convenience was great until the shipping costs began getting ridiculous and books I had ordered started disappearing.
Some books were cancelled. Others simply never showed up. The breaking point came when ratio variants I had preordered months earlier were suddenly “sold out.” Apparently, even paying in advance did not mean the book had actually been secured.
Forget the order.
Brilliant.
At that point, collecting started feeling less like a hobby and more like gambling with extra shipping fees. That was when I reached my Bender moment.
“We wanted to provide better service.”
Actual reason:
Fine. I’ll start my own comic shop...
with comic books, trade paperbacks,
sports cards, TCG, and whatever other nerdy thing catches my eye.
Okay. Maybe that is not exactly how the quote goes.
The Villain’s Code
Phoenix Rise Comics exists to provide the kind of service I wanted when I was the customer. That starts with a concept so revolutionary that it may frighten certain retailers: when you preorder a comic, that comic should actually be ordered.
- Preorders are placed with the distributor rather than treated like hopeful suggestions.
- Books are handled and packed with the same care I expect for my own collection.
- Preorder pricing should save you money while still allowing me to make enough money to keep this operation alive. We both get to win.
- Questions receive answers from an actual person rather than disappearing into a faceless support maze.
- Trust is earned through what happens after something goes wrong, not by pretending nothing ever will.
I am human, which is unfortunate but currently unavoidable. I will make mistakes. Distributors will make mistakes. Publishers will move release dates, shipments will arrive damaged, and occasionally the universe will wake up and choose chaos.
In fact, I will try to go beyond simply fixing the problem. My goal is to handle it well enough that you never have to think twice about where you placed your trust when choosing your comic shop.
Comics are more than inventory. They are stories, artwork, memories, investments, pieces of our childhood, and tiny paper rectangles with the supernatural ability to destroy a perfectly good budget. They deserve to be treated like they matter.
The Rise
Here is the best part: this story is not finished. Phoenix Rise Comics is still being written, and collectors will always help determine what this shop becomes next.
Every suggestion, every conversation, and every message that begins with, “Hey Kevin, have you thought about...” has the potential to shape the store. I may have opened the doors, but the people who collect here will help decide where we go.
Want to see more independent books, another publisher, a new card product, or something PRC does not currently carry? Tell me.
Have an idea that would improve preorders, pull lists, shipping, or the community? I genuinely want to hear it.
Think one of my ideas is terrible? That information may also be useful, although it will be entered into the permanent record under “insubordination.”
This is not a giant corporation where feedback disappears into a support ticket and is never seen again. When you reach out to Phoenix Rise Comics, you are talking directly to me, and I intend to keep it that way.
PRC is not meant to be only my comic shop. The goal is to build something collectors can help shape, a shop where we celebrate great stories, hunt incredible books, discover hidden gems, debate the best Batman run, and occasionally encourage one another’s highly questionable purchasing decisions.
Collectors will help build this place, and together we can all share the spoils.
